Course Overview

The METRO Track Vehicle Operation (TVO1) course is specifically designed to impart the necessary knowledge and skills to Rail Safety Workers (RSWs) for the safe operation of road/rail vehicles on track in strict adherence to regulatory safety requirements and workplace procedures within the MTM network.

This comprehensive course equips RSWs with the proficiency to conduct pre-operational and post-operational inspections on both tracking and off-tracking vehicles, operate equipment, and fulfill essential documentation requirements. It covers the operation of all road/rail on-track vehicles.

Additionally, participants will gain the essential competencies to safely access rail tracks, operate track vehicles within designated worksites, and exit these worksites, all while working on the MTM Metropolitan Rail Network during rail-related activities.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • Pre and post operational checks of road rail vehicles.
  • On and off tracking.
  • Travelling to, accessing and egressing worksites.
  • Operating road rail vehicles in accordance with manufacturers and Rail Infrastructure Manager’s procedures.
  • Problems that can occur when operating road rail vehicles.
  • Modifying activities depending on changes in the working environment.
  • The protocol to respond to an emergency situation.

Course Outcomes

Participants who are deemed competent in knowledge and practical assessments will receive:

Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment (SoA) for the units of competency;

  • TLIC2054 Access rail track to run track vehicle within defined worksite.
  • TLIC3045 Operate road/rail vehicle.
  • MTM Track Vehicle Operator 1 (TVO1) Certificate of Completion.

The TVO Certificate of Completion is valid for two years.

Important Information

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES

Course Prerequisites and Age Requirement Applicants MUST have:

  • Completed an MTM Train Track Safety Awareness course within the last 24 months.
  • Hold TLIF2080 Safely access the rail corridor unit of competency or its successor TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor.
  • Hold a current valid Driver’s Licence.
  • Hold a current valid Cat1 medical certificate.
  • Operators of road/rail vehicles may need to have applicable road and/or High-Risk Licence or certification requirements for the type of vehicle being used.
  • Participants MUST be 18 and above years of age.

PPE REQUIREMENTS

The practical will be completed in a simulated rail corridor and full PPE will be required. The following PPE is required:

  • Safety work boots – steel capped, lace-up with ankle support.
  • Full-length pants
  • Long sleeve shirt or rail approved long sleeve high visibility shirt
  • Rail Approved orange hi-vis vest
  • Hard hat
  • Safety glasses eye protection

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LL&N)

Before training begins, participants will go through an assessment that helps us determine if any learning support is needed. To successfully complete this course, participants are expected to have the following language, literacy, and numeracy skills:

  • Interpret and comprehend workplace safety signs and symbols.
  • Comprehend workplace policies, procedures, and informational materials.
  • Comprehend basic spoken English.
  • Communicate essential safety-related information.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Require a current Cat1 medical

ISSUING OF STATEMENTS

ATS as provider of this training will issue and email you an electronic copy of your Statement of Attainment within 5-10 business days of completing the course. Your Statement of Attainment is issued by ATS as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.

PROOF OF IDENTITY:

Participants are required to bring one of the following current valid photo identification documents (ID) on the day of training:

  • Australian or International Passport
  • Driver’s License

RENEWAL:
The Metro Track Vehicle Operator Level 1 ( TVO1) Certificate of Completion is valid for two years. Applicatnts are required to complete a Metro Track Vehicle Operator Level 1 ( TVO1) refresher through Metro Academy within 24 months of issue of the Certificate of Completion to maintain currency.

UPLOAD CERTIFICATE TO RIW CARD:

Australian Testing Services (ATS) will upload the participant’s certificate to the RIW database.

  • To prevent delay, participants MUST have the correct RIW number or hold a RIW card/number.
  • Delay can occur if you don’t hold a valid or a RIW card/number.

 

Assessment Methods

To be deemed competent, participants are required to successfully complete a combination of the written and practical tasks which form an assessment instrument.

Delivery Methods

The delivery of this course is face-to-face in a combination of classroom and practical activities in a simulated rail environment.
