Course Overview
This course is the initial introduction to enable people to safely work in the Metro Trains Melbourne ( MTM) Rail Network. This course is designed to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to safely access the rail corridor, access the danger zone, and respond to an emergency.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
In this course you will learn about:
- Common terminology used in the rail corridor.
- Safe Places, Danger Zones and Restricted Locations in the rail corridor.
- Hazards and risk and suitable control measures associated with working in the rail corridor.
- Policies and procedures to follow when working in the MTM rail infrastructure.
- Safety critical and emergency communication protocol.
- Personal measures to enable you to turn up for work Fit for Duty.
- Appropriate PPE to be worn in the rail corridor.

Course Outcomes
Participants who are deemed competent in knowledge and practical assessments will receive:
- Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment (SoA) for the unit of competency TLIF0020 Safely access the rail corridor.
- MTM Train Track Safety Awareness Certificate of Completion.
SoA will be issued to participants via email within ten (10) business working days. To prevent delay, participants MUST pay in full, and have a current valid email address, valid contact number, and USI number.
Important Information
COURSE PRE-REQUISITES
While there are no specific course prerequisites, it’s important to note that there is an age requirement for this course.
- Particpants MUST be 18 and above years of age.
PPE REQUIREMENTS
The practical will be completed in a simulated rail corridor and full PPE will be required. The following PPE is required:
- Safety work boots – steel capped, lace-up with ankle support.
- Full-length pants
- Long sleeve shirt or rail approved long sleeve high visibility shirt
- Rail Approved orange hi-vis vest
- Hard hat
- Safety glasses eye protection
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LL&N)
Before training begins, participants will go through an assessment that helps us determine if any learning support is needed. To successfully complete this course, participants are expected to have the following language, literacy, and numeracy skills:
- Interpret and comprehend workplace safety signs and symbols.
- Comprehend workplace policies, procedures, and informational materials.
- Comprehend basic spoken English.
- Communicate essential safety-related information.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Require min Cat3 medical
ISSUING OF STATEMENTS
ATS as provider of this training will issue and email you an electronic copy of your Statement of Attainment within 5-10 business days of completing the course. Your Statement of Attainment is issued by ATS as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Other Things to Know
PROOF OF IDENTITY:
Participants are required to bring one of the following current valid photo identification documents (ID) on the day of training:
- Australian or International Passport
- Driver’s Licence
RENEWAL:
The Train Track Safety Awareness ( TTSA ) certificate of completion is valid for two (2) years. Applications are required to complete the Train Track Safety Awareness ( TTSA) refresher through Metro Academy within 24 months of issue of the certificate of completion to maintain currency.
UPLOAD CERTIFICATE TO RIW CARD:
Australian Testing Services (ATS) will upload the participant’s certificate to the RIW database.
- To prevent delay, participants MUST have the correct RIW number or hold a RIW card/number.
- Delay can occur if you don’t hold a valid or a RIW card/number.
Assessment Methods
To be deemed competent, participants are required to successfully complete a combination of the written and practical tasks which form an assessment instrument.
Delivery Methods
The delivery of this course is face -to-face in a combination of in a classroom and practical activities in a simulated rail environment.
